Monterey is an enchanting destination that captivates visitors year-round with its breathtaking coastal views, rich history, and vibrant marine life. The charming town is especially inviting during the spring and fall seasons when the weather is mild, and the tourist crowds are thinner. Traveling to Monterey, California

To get there, fly into Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) for the most convenient access. Alternatively, San Jose International Airport (SJC) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) are larger options within a few hours’ drive. From any of these airports, take Highway 1 heading south, offering a scenic coastal drive, or Highway 101 for a quicker inland route.

The drive from SFO or SJC can take anywhere from 2 to 3.5 hours, depending on traffic. Traffic is typically heavier on Friday afternoons.

Local Regulations: What to Know Before You Go

Before hitting the trails with your furry friend, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the local dog regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. In Monterey, dogs are generally required to be on a leash at all times, especially on popular trails and paved roads within day-use areas and campgrounds. Always be vigilant and respectful of guidelines regarding waste disposal; most parks provide dog waste stations to help keep the environment clean. Do note that specific beaches demand leashes as well. Following these rules helps protect local wildlife and ensures that everyone can enjoy these beautiful trails safely.

Safety First: How to Ensure a Safe Hike for You and Your Dog

When hitting the trails, it’s essential to consider the weather, especially the heat. Monterey can have warm, sunny days, which might be perfect for a hike but taxing for your furry friend. Dogs can overheat quickly, so always bring plenty of water for both you and your dog. Collapsible water bowls are a handy tool to ensure your dog stays hydrated. Aim to take breaks in the shade and avoid peak midday heat to keep your dog cool.

Protecting your dog’s paws is also crucial. Hot sand, gravel, and rough terrain can cause burns or injuries. Before heading out, test the ground with the back of your hand; if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Consider using dog booties for added protection, or try to stick to shaded or grassy areas as much as possible. Additionally, always inspect your dog’s paws after the hike for any cuts or abrasions.

The good news is, Monterey typically has very mild weather and temperatures above 80 degrees are less common, although it can happen. Please be mindful and check the weather before you head out!

Monterey and its surrounding areas are also home to poison oak, which can pose a threat to both you and your dog. The plant’s leaves can cause irritation and rashes upon contact. Make sure to stay on designated trails and keep an eye out for the telltale shiny leaves of poison oak. If your dog comes into contact with it, bathe them as soon as possible to avoid spreading the irritation. Using dog-friendly wipes can also help remove the oil from their coat in the meantime.

Must-Pack Items for Hiking with Dogs

Packing the right items for your furry friend ensures they have a safe and enjoyable hike. Here are essential items to consider:

  • Leash: Make sure to use a sturdy, 6-foot leash as most trails require dogs to be on a leash at all times. A hands-free leash can also be convenient for your dogs on the hiking trails
  • Collapsible Water Bowl: To keep your dog hydrated during the hike without carrying bulky water bowls.
  • Poop Bags: Always clean up after your dog to keep the trails clean and enjoyable for everyone. Although many trailheads in Monterey do provide poop bags, you always want to bring your own just in case there are none left
  • First Aid Kit: Include items specific for dogs like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers for tick removal. You don’t necessarily need to bring this on your hike. I like to pack it in my car – just in case!
  • Booties: Protect your dog’s paws from rough terrain or hot surfaces with booties if they are new to hiking. I hike with my dogs quite frequently so their paws are hardened to the terrain. However booties may be helpful if they are first timers or if the terrain is rougher.

Don’t forget to also pack essential items for yourself to ensure a great hiking experience:

  • Water Drom Bag: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially when navigating sunny trails. If you’ve been following me, you know I typically like having a drom bag in my backpack so I can easily access the water. I feel like it helps me stay more hydrated along the trails.
  • Sunscreen: Protect your skin from harmful UV rays, particularly on exposed trails. This is one of my favorite brands from Australia. I’m generally not a fan of US sunscreens because of the ingredients they use in there.
  • Trail Sneakers: The trails in Monterey are generally not too intense, so you can get away with trail sneakers if that fits your needs! Trail sneakers are generally lighter and more flexible compared to a regular hiking boot. This is my preference when I am hiking are my adidas Terrex Agravic Ultra Trail Runners (the new version is the Terrex Agravic Flow 2.0 Trail Running Shoes). It feels super light and my feet don’t get extremely sweaty when I’m hiking. It also grips the trails a lot better than a standard sneaker.
    • If you do want a more traditional hiking boot, adidas has multiple waterproof hiking shoes that are great options. The Terrex Ax4 Mid Gore-Tex Hiking Shoes, staying within the same Terrex line, is an excellent option.
  • Dress in Layers: Dress in tons of layers! Monterey weather can be freezing cold one minute and then super hot the next minute when the sun peaks out behind the clouds. This scenic trail is perfect for a leisurely walk along the coast. Stretching over 18 miles, it offers ample opportunities for you and your dog to enjoy the ocean breeze. Don’t forget to keep your dog leashed and bring enough water for the both of you.

The favorite section of the Monterey Peninsula Recreational Trail is along Pacific Grove, starting at Lover’s Point Park and going west towards Asilomar State Beach.

2. Garland Ranch Regional Park

Tucked away in Carmel Valley, this park offers a variety of trails where your dog can join you. The trails range from easy to moderate, making it a versatile spot for all fitness levels. My favorite hike in Garland Ranch Regional Park is the 3.4 mile Redwood Canyon Trail. This is a super fun trail that has multiple stream crossings, which makes it a perfect dog-friendly hike in Monterey. Your pup will love cooling off in the water!

Remember to bring waste bags and keep an eye out for poison oak.

One of the most beloved dog-friendly beaches in the area, Carmel Beach allows dogs to roam off-leash if they respond well to voice commands. Just be sure to clean up after your dog to keep the beach pristine for all visitors.

Located in the heart of Carmel, this preserve offers a peaceful hiking experience amidst nature. With 34 acres of space, the Mission Trail Nature Preserve is a great place to walk your dog on a gentle trail. Though dogs are not allowed in the redwood groves, they are permitted on Garrapata Beach and its surrounding trails, as long as they are on a leash. Dogs are allowed on-leash at the beach at Gate 19 (south end of park) and on the trails leading to it. The Calla Lily Valley is particularly stunning in late spring around May when the lilies are blooming and out.

After your hike, consider visiting one of the local tasting rooms such as Galante Vineyards or Dawns Dream Winery, where dogs are warmly welcomed.
