Level Foods
These protein bars by Level Foods is one of the best healthy protein bars you can get on the market. Not only are they healthy, they taste great!
All of the bars are Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Non-GMO, Kosher and contains 14g of protein. Basically, Level Foods has put a lot of care into its ingredients so that you can fuel your body with the right food.
Their protein is made from egg whites, collagen and contains superfoods – the Banana Bread flavor for example contains Lion’s Mane which is one of my favorite mushrooms to eat. Lion’s Mane has a long history in Chinese medicine and it is believed to have many health-promoting substances.
Disclaimer: Level Foods sent me these protein bars and I receive commissions for purchases made from this post. However, it does not change my honest opinion about these bars!
Where to buy Level Foods Protein Bars

When do you need to fuel up?
When you are hiking, it’s really important to keep your body fueled. This holds true if you are a beginner hiker, advanced hiker, or anywhere in between! Even when I go on small hikes like Flagpole Loop, I will back protein bars in my bag. You never know when you will be hungry and hiking hungry is a horrible feeling (and can be very unsafe).
Protein bars are my go-to hiking snack because they are (generally) nutritious, lighter weight than ‘normal’ food, and easy to eat (i.e., not messy). The Banana Bread flavor of the Level Foods protein bar is 51g and has 14g of protein.
It may be tempting to bring chips, cookies or fruit on a hike – and you definitely can – but if you need to remember to get protein as well to help your body. A bag of chips for example is 28g and only has 2g of protein, which isn’t enough. On the healthier spectrum, an apple is great for you but because of the water content, it is very heavy and you may not want to carry that in your pack. While high in vitamins, there is almost 0 protein in an apple.
Why do you need protein? Protein supports our body to heal our muscles! It’s important to get enough protein when you are hiking. People often underestimate how taxing it is on your body when you go hiking.
Honest review of Level Foods Protein Bars
I have tried so many protein bars. When I was younger, I used to just go to the supermarket and pick protein bar brands that looked pretty – big mistake! Reading the back label / nutrition facts of protein bars is SO important. The protein bar aisle is super crowded and there are a lot of unhealthy and inefficient bars out there.
Is it a healthy protein bar?
Level Foods is packed full with nutrients and gives you essential sugars to fuel your body without going overboard with the “crash and burn” type sugar. Let’s compare two different protein bars as an example.
The label on the left is for a Chocolate Brownie Clif Bar. You can see that it is 68g, provides 250 calories, but has 21g of sugar and only 9g of protein. The label on the right is Level Foods. It’s a smaller bar at 51g but provides 210 calories and 14g of protein – at only 11g of sugar! So the Clif Bar sugar to protein ratio is 2.3 and Level Foods is 0.78.
To be clear, you definitely need sugar on your hike. But there is a big different in sugar like cane sugar / syrup which can give you that “crash and burn” feel – and something more natural like agave nectar.
Ok but does it taste good?
YES! They have 4 different flavors: Banana Bread, Oat Cookie, Salted Brownie, and Apple Crisp.
Level Foods sent me 4 boxes of their protein bars. Usually, when you hear of something healthy, it also means that it doesn’t taste good. I am dead serious when I tell you that I have spit out healthy protein bars before. There is specifically one in the market that is super well known for using egg whites.. I was excited by the healthiness of it and bought a giant pack. Both my husband and I couldn’t finish our bars and we couldn’t even find a friend to take it off our hands..
Level Foods is one of those break through brands that has been able to achieve both healthy ingredients and tastiness. My favorite flavor is the Salted Brownie. I am a chocolate lover so this is right in my wheelhouse.
The bars are more on the chewy side rather than the crumby-cookie-type bar. They taste fresh and have really good flavor, even though they are much lower in sugar than other bars in the market.
