St. George is the first major town you hit once you leave Vegas and head to the main Utah parks like Zion National Park. Many people will stop by St. George without ever getting out of their car – or maybe just for a quick lunch break. I used to do this as well! But more recently I’ve started exploring more hikes around the St. George area and discovered the Owen’s Loop Trail in St. George.
Owen’s Loop Trail
The Owen’s Loop Trail is a quick hike a little over 2.5 miles that takes you above St. George and has sweeping views of the town below. This hike is so popular because it gives you major bang for your buck. The hike itself is only 1 hour and you get views immediately!
This hike is also a great dog friendly trail in St. George. There is not much shade so be careful hiking in the summer, but during the fall this hike was perfect.
The hike starts off at a parking lot by a park – we saw a baby reveal party/photoshoot when we were there. You go up the main trail to get into the actual hike. About a half mile in, you’ll see a few splits from the main trail. I highly recommend downloading the trail map for Owens Loop Trail because there are a few areas where the trail splits.
Once you’re at the top of the ridge, you’ll get beautiful views of St George below. From there, the rest of the loop is really just walking along this ridge. One funny thing – Owens Loop Trail isn’t really a loop. It’s more of a there and back, but there is a tiny loop at the very end of the hike to make it a “loop.”
So a little over a mile once you reach the end, in order to get back, you’ll have to turn around the same way you came.
Overall this is a great hike to stretch your legs and also a good one if you’re spending a few days in St George!
